RESUMO

RATIONALE: Personal care product chemicals (PCPCs) are the chemicals used in personal care products. Many of them are endocrine disruptors and have potential adverse effects on humans. The concentrations of PCPCs in urine are the main biomarker for assessing human exposure. METHODS: A method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 14 PCPCs in human urine using dispersive liquid-liquid extraction combined with ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). RESULTS: Compared with liquid-liquid extraction, this method had the advantages of time efficiency, sensitivity, and limited organic solvent consumption. It produced good linearity (0.9965-0.9996), limits of detection (2.82-36.36 pg mL-1 ), limits of quantitation (9.39-121.08 pg mL-1 ), matrix effect (-0.90%-2.55%), intra-day precision (relative standard deviations [RSDs] <15%), and inter-day precision (RSDs <19.9%). The method had satisfactory relative recovery at three concentration levels. CONCLUSIONS: A rapid method was developed for the simultaneous quantification of 14 PCPCs in human urine. The practicability of the method was verified with 21 urine from university students. It is expected that this method will provide a powerful reference for the assessment of exposure to PCPCs in large populations.

RESUMO

Two new fungal polyketides with unusual skeleton, collecapsins A and B (1-2), along with two known macrolactins A and B (3-4), were isolated from the rice cultures of an endophytic fungus Colletotrichum capsici obtained from the fresh Siegesbeckia pubescens Makino. Their structures were established by a combination of NMR, HRESIMS, and IR analysis. The absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were determined on the detailed analysis of the modified Mosher's derivatives' spectra and its key NOEs correlations. In this case, the absolute configurations of all chiral centres of 1 were determined for the first time, showed that 1 is a C-6/C-8 epimer of colletruncoic acid methyl ester. Compounds 1-2 demonstrated promising lipid lowing activity via the inhibition of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase with IC50 values of 8.72 and 15.28 µM. Compounds 3-4 exhibited antibacterial activity with MIC values ranging from 0.25-25.8 µM.

RESUMO

Bisphenol A and its structural analogues (BPs) are widely used chemicals in electronics devices. To get insight into the occupational exposure to the full-time employees compared with the residents, urinary BPs in workers dismantling e-waste and in nearby residents were compared. Only 4 BPs among the tested 8 congeners, bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol A, bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (BPF), were extensively detected with the detection frequencies of 100%, 99%, 98.7%, 51.3%. The median concentration of bisphenol A was 8.48 ng/mL, followed by BPAF (1.05 ng/mL), BPS (0.115 ng/mL), and BPF (0.110 ng/mL). The 4 detected BPs had a median concentration (Σ4BPs) ranging from 0.950 to 64.5 ng/mL in all volunteers, with a median value of 10.2 ng/mL. Result indicated the median concentration of ∑4BPs in worker's urine was significantly higher (14.2 ng/mL) than those in residents in nearby towns (4.52 ng/mL and 5.37 ng/mL) (p < 0.05), suggesting a BPs' occupational exposure risk related to e-waste dismantling. Besides, urinary ∑4BPs' median concentrations for the employees in family workshops (14.5 ng/mL) were significantly higher than those in plants with centralized management (9.36 ng/mL). Among volunteers, higher ∑4BPs were observed in groups of aged above 50 years, males, or body weight under average with no significant correlations. The estimated daily intake of bisphenol A did not exceed the reference dose (50 µg/kg bw/day) recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In this research, excess levels of BPs were recorded for the full-time employees in e-waste dismantling sites. Strengthened standards could support public health initiatives for full-time worker protection and reduce take-home BPs to family members.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients have functional and structural brain abnormalities. The cerebellum also showed varying degrees of damage. However, no studies on cerebellar-cerebral functional connectivity (FC) have been conducted in ESRD patients. This study aimed to investigate the changes in cerebellar-cerebral FC in ESRD patients and its relationship with neuropsychological and clinical indexes. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological assessment were performed on 37 ESRD patients and 35 control subjects. Seed-based FC analysis was performed to investigate inter-group differences in cerebellar-cerebral FC. In addition, the relations of altered FC with the neuropsychological function and clinical indicators were analyzed in ERSD patients. RESULTS: ESRD patients exhibited alterations in cerebellar-cerebral FC involving the executive control network, default mode network, and affective-limbic network compared to control subjects (False discovery rate-corrected, p < 0.05). The altered cerebellar-cerebral FC was associated with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale score (p < 0.05), and correlated with serum creatinine and uric acid levels within the ESRD group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates that cerebellar-cerebral FC is involved in the neural substrates of cognitive impairment in ESRD patients. The findings may provide clinically relevant new neuroimaging biomarkers for the neuropathological mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment of ESRD.

RESUMO

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are extensively used as flame retardants and plasticizers, but their endocrine disrupting potentials have raised concerns. However, the impacts of OPFR exposures on reproductive and thyroid hormones in females remains unclear. In this study, serum concentrations of OPFRs were investigated, and levels of reproductive and thyroid hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol, anti-Müllerian hormone, prolactin (PRL), testosterone (T), and thyroid stimulating hormone, were analyzed in childbearing-age females undergoing in-vitro fertilization treatment from Tianjin, a coastal city in China (n = 319). Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) was the predominant OPFR, with a median concentration of 0.33 ng/mL and a detection frequency of 96.6%. In the whole population, tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) were positively associated with T (p < 0.05), while triethyl phosphate (TEP) was negatively associated with LH (p < 0.05) and LH/FSH (p < 0.01). Particularly, TCIPP was negatively associated with PRL in the younger subgroup (age≤30, p < 0.05). Moreover, TCIPP was negatively associated with diagnostic antral follicle counting (AFC) in the mediation analysis by a dominating direct effect (p < 0.01). In conclusion, serum levels of OPFRs were significantly associated with reproductive and thyroid hormone levels and a risk of decreased ovarian reserve in childbearing-age females, with age and body mass index being significant influencing factors.

RESUMO

The widespread use of phthalates (PAEs) has drawn increasing attention due to their endocrine disruption and reproductive toxicity, while the steroid metabolome is essential for follicular development. However, the mechanism by which PAE exposure affects ovarian reserve through the steroid metabolome remains unclear. This study recruited 264 childbearing-age women in Tianjin (China) from April 2019 to August 2020 in a cross-sectional design. Target metabolome analysis of 16 steroids was performed in follicular fluid (FF) to compare diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) against normal ovarian reserve (NOR) women and differential steroids were identified using binary logistic analyses. Further analysis of eleven PAE metabolites (mPAEs) in FF was conducted, and the retrieved oocyte number (RON) representing ovarian reserve was counted. Multiple linear regression and quantile-based g-computation (qgcomp) models were used to associate individual mPAEs and mPAE mixture with the DOR-related differential steroids in FF. Mediation analysis was used to discuss the mediating effect of DOR-related steroids on the association between mPAEs and RON. Androstenedione (A4), corticosterone (CORT), cortisol (COR) and cortisone were significantly down-regulated in FF from women with DOR. Nine mPAEs with detection frequencies greater than 60% and median concentrations of 0.02-4.86 ng/mL were incorporated into statistical models. Negative associations with COR and CORT were found for mono-ethyl phthalate (mEP), mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (mEOHP), and mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (mEHP). A positive association with cortisone was found for mEOHP, mEHP, monobutyl phthalate (mBP), and mono (2-isobutyl) phthalate (miBP). The qgcomp and mediation analyses revealed that mEP and mEOHP not only significantly contributed to the decline of COR and CORT in the mixed exposure but also indirectly reduced RON through the mediating effects of COR and CORT. In conclusion, PAE exposure may decrease ovarian reserve by downregulating COR and CORT.

RESUMO

Extensive use of nitrogen-based flame retardants (NFRs) has resulted in their widespread environmental occurrence. To investigate human exposure to NFRs on a national scale, the abundance and spatial distribution of NFRs were assessed in urine specimens collected from 13 cities in China. Six out of eight target NFRs were detectable in more than half of the urine samples, and the total concentrations of NFRs ranged from 3.22 to 880 ng/mL with a median of 46.7 ng/mL. Cyanuric acid was the most abundant chemical, accounting for 66.2%, followed by melamine (16.3%), ammelide (10.8%), and ammeline (6.11%). Regional differences in concentrations and composition profiles of NFRs were observed within China as a result of different production and application profiles. In addition, we found that urinary NFRs levels were much higher than but statistically correlated with that of organophosphates (r2 = 0.69, p < 0.05), another class of phosphorus-based flame retardant, implying similar emission sources and/or human exposure pathways. Furthermore, the estimated daily intakes and hazard quotients revealed that the Chinese population's exposure to NFRs is within safe limits. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to document the ubiquitous occurrence and region-specific variations of human exposure to NFRs in China.

RESUMO

Ischemic stroke is closely associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis and intestinal barrier dysfunction. Prebiotic intervention could modulate the intestinal microbiota, thus considered a practical strategy for neurological disorders. Puerariae Lobatae Radix-resistant starch (PLR-RS) is a potential novel prebiotic; however, its role in ischemic stroke remains unknown. This study aimed to clarify the effects and underlying mechanisms of PLR-RS in ischemic stroke. Middle cerebral artery occlusion surgery was performed to establish a model of ischemic stroke in rats. After gavage for 14 days, PLR-RS attenuated ischemic stroke-induced brain impairment and gut barrier dysfunction. Moreover, PLR-RS rescued gut microbiota dysbiosis and enriched Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium. We transplanted the fecal microbiota from PLR-RS-treated rats into rats with ischemic stroke and found that the brain and colon damage were also ameliorated. Notably, we found that PLR-RS promoted the gut microbiota to produce a higher level of melatonin. Intriguingly, exogenous gavage of melatonin attenuated ischemic stroke injury. In particular, melatonin attenuated brain impairment via a positive co-occurrence pattern in the intestinal microecology. Specific beneficial bacteria served as leaders or keystone species to promoted gut homeostasis, such as Enterobacter, Bacteroidales_S24-7_group, Prevotella_9, Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae. Thus, this new underlying mechanism could explain that the therapeutic efficacy of PLR-RS on ischemic stroke at least partly attributed to gut microbiota-derived melatonin. In summary, improving intestinal microecology by prebiotic intervention and melatonin supplementation in the gut were found to be effective therapies for ischemic stroke.

RESUMO

Nitrogenous flame retardants (NFRs) have aroused worldwide public concern as their nephrotoxic effect. However, knowledge regarding the pathogenesis mechanism of their exposure to induce kidney injury remains largely unknown. In this study, eight NFRs, four oxidative stress biomarkers (OSBs), and one kidney injury biomarker, namely neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), were measured in urine specimens collected from residents living around e-waste disassembly and reference areas, representing two exposure scenarios. Significant higher concentrations of Σ8NFR (median: 70.6 vs. 33.8 µg/g Cre) and five biomarkers (124 vs. 97.4 µg/g Cre) were found in urines of populations living in e-waste site compared to those in the reference site (p < 0.05). Primary NFRs exhibited significant positive associations with OSBs and NGAL regardless of the population examined, implying that chronic NFRs exposure could induce oxidative stress and kidney damage. By using structure equation model, we found that oxidative stress, particularly DNA and RNA oxidation mediated 16.1% of the total effect of NFRs on NGAL in e-waste related people, but not on the general population. Overall, this study suggests long-term chronic exposure to NFRs can induce oxidative stress and renal injury in humans but the pathogenesis mode may be scenario-specific.

RESUMO

Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a serious pregnancy complication, and gut dysbiosis is an important cause of it. Puerariae lobatae Radix (PLR) is a medicine and food homologous species; however, its effect on PE is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of PLR in alleviating PE and its mechanisms. We used an NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced PE mouse model to examine the efficacy of preventive and therapeutic PLR supplementation. The results showed that both PLR interventions alleviated hypertension and proteinuria, increased fetal and placental weights, and elevated the levels of VEGF and PlGF. Moreover, PLR protected the placenta from oxidative stress via activating the Nrf2/HO-1/NQO1 pathway and mitigated placental damage by increasing intestinal barrier markers (ZO-1, Occludin, and Claudin-1) expression and reducing lipopolysaccharide leakage. Notably, preventive PLR administration corrected gut dysbiosis in PE mice, as evidenced by the increased abundance and positive interactions of beneficial bacteria including Bifidobacterium, Blautia, and Turicibacter. Fecal microbiota transplantation confirmed that the gut microbiota partially mediated the beneficial effects of PLR on PE. Our findings revealed that modulating the gut microbiota is an effective strategy for the treatment of PE and highlighted that PLR might be used as an intestinal nutrient supplement in PE patients.

RESUMO

Many environmental phenols, such as bisphenols, benzophenones and parabens, are known as endocrine disruptors and can adversely affect human health. However, the knowledge of human exposure to common environmental phenols in Chinese rural areas is insufficient. In this context, 181 urine samples were collected from participants in a rural area in Northwest China and were analyzed for nine bisphenols, three benzophenones and four parabens. Bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S, benzophenone-1 (BP-1), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), 4-hydroxybenzophenone, methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben and propylparaben (PrP) were detected in more than 50% of the urine samples, with median concentrations of 0.938 ng/mL, 0.0111 ng/mL, 0.191 ng/mL, 1.30 ng/mL, 0.0320 ng/mL, 25.9 ng/mL, 4.31 ng/mL and 1.94 ng/mL, respectively. A significant positive correlation was observed between BP-1 and BP-3, as well as between MeP and PrP, indicating metabolic transformation and combined use, respectively. The concentrations of MeP and PrP in females were significantly higher than those in males, suggesting that females were exposed to more MeP and PrP than males. Urinary concentrations of BPA, BP-3, MeP and PrP could be influenced by age. Other demographic information, such as annual household income, education and occupation was not associated with the exposure level of the targeted phenols in adults. The estimated daily intakes of the analytes except BPA were all below their respective tolerable/acceptable daily intake levels. This study profiles the demographic differences in the exposure to environmental phenols in general populations from rural areas and provides information on risk assessments.

RESUMO

Phthalates (PAEs) are widely used plasticizers drawing increasing concern due to reproductive toxicity. However, studies on serum PAEs metabolites (mPAEs) and their associations with human ovarian function remain very scarce. In this study, from April 2019 to August 2020, a total of 297 women of childbearing age were recruited in Tianjin, China. Eleven mPAEs were analyzed in serum samples and eight mPAEs were detected at frequencies > 65% with median concentrations of 0.43-15.3 ng/mL. In multinomial logistic analysis, an increase in serum mono (2-isobutyl) phthalate (miBP) was associated with decline in antral follicle count (AFC) (OR=1.26, 95% CI: 0.99, 1.61) and 5-mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (mEHHP) was significantly associated with AFC increase (OR=1.43, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.92), which were aligned with the associations found between mPAEs and AMH through generalized linear regression. In multiple linear regression models, per 10% increase in serum mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (mEHP), mono (2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (mEOHP) (oxo-mEHP), and principal component 1 featured for high concentrations of mono-n-butyl phthalate (mBP), miBP and mEHP were associated with 0.15 (95% CI: -0.29, -0.02), 0.01 (95% CI: -0.01, 0.00) and 0.01 (95% CI: -0.02, 0.00) ln-unit decrease in estradiol (E2) levels, respectively, while mono-[(2-carboxymethyl) hexyl] phthalate (mCMHP) (carboxymethyl-mEHP) was positively associated with 0.05 ln-unit increase of E2 (95% CI: 0.02, 0.08). The observed negative associations between mPAEs and the Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) also aligned with the change in AFC. Generalized linear regression also revealed nonlinear associations between mono-ethyl phthalate (mEP), mCMHP and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Overall, serum mEHP and its metabolites were negatively associated with E2. miBP was negatively associated with AFC. The nonlinear associations between mPAEs and FSH, and AMH need further study.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the correlation between condylar morphology and clinical manifestations in patients with degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). METHODS: A total of 175 joints of 131 patients with DJD were included. Data on patients' basic information and symptoms were collected and analyzed. Condylar morphology was evaluated using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The correlation between the condylar morphology and clinical manifestations was analyzed. RESULTS: The prevalence of joint noises, clicks, and crepitus was 93/175 (53%), 73/175 (42%), and 20/175 (11%), respectively. Condylar anteroposterior diameter and condylar height were correlated with pain. There was a correlation between the shape of the condyle in the sagittal plane and joint noise. CONCLUSION: Condylar morphology and clinical features of DJD were correlated to some extent.

RESUMO

The biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles from precious metals has been of wide concern. Their antibacterial activity is a main bottleneck restricting the bacterial activity and reduction performance. Here, bio-electrochemical systems were used to harvest electroactive biofilms (EABs), where bacteria were naturally protected by extracellular polymeric substances to keep activity. The biofilm was further encapsulated with polydopamine (PDA) as additional shield. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were biosynthesized on EABs, whose electroactivity could be fully recovered after Ag+ reduction. The PDA increased bacterial viability by 90%-105%, confirmed as an effective protection against antibacterial activity of Ag+/AgNPs. The biosynthetic process changed the component and function of the microbial community, shifting from bacterial Fe reduction to archaeal methanogenesis. These results demonstrated that the electrochemical acclimation of EABs and encapsulation with PDA were effective protective measures during the biosynthesis of AgNPs. These approaches have a bright future in the green synthesis of nanomaterials, biotoxic wastewater treatment, and sustainable bio-catalysis.

RESUMO

Hydrochars were obtained by hydrothermal carbonization treatment of municipal sewage sludge. Effects of reaction temperature (180-300 °C) and reaction time (2-15 h) on structural characteristics of the hydrochars, and changes and release risk of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the hydrochars were investigated. Reaction temperature played a more important role than reaction time on hydrochar properties and decarboxylation reaction was the primary process during the converting of sludge to hydrochars. The sludge hydrochars had higher yields, carbon recovery rates, polarity and less aromaticity than biochars. Hydrothermal process reduced PPCPs' load in sludge hydrochars effectively except caffeine and acetaminophen. The hydrochars prepared at intermediate and high temperatures (240 and 300 °C) had higher caffeine concentrations than the original sludge, which can be ascribed to the transformation of N-containing precursors. The highest CaCl2 extracted caffeine concentration occurred at intermediate temperature of 240 °C (48.1 µg/kg) due to the stronger affinity of caffeine in the high-temperature hydrochars. Caffeine was not detected in hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin (HPCD) extract. Hydrochars prepared at low temperature (180 °C) had a higher acetaminophen concentration than the original sludge, which was attributed to the high thermal stability temperature of acetaminophen. Low- and intermediate-temperature hydrochars had higher CaCl2 extracted acetaminophen concentrations. The HPCD extracted acetaminophen was low with a range of nd to 6.72 µg/kg. In conclusion, PPCPs are less likely to constitute a limiting factor on the farm application of sludge hydrochar. This study provides theoretical support for the safe application of sludge hydrochar in the farmland.

RESUMO

Biochar was for the first time produced from Suaeda glauca. The immobilization of Pb and Cd by this biochar and pig manure biochar was examined in two types of soils by diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) extraction. Addition of biochars decreased DTPA extractable Pb and Cd in Fluvo-aquic soil with reduction rates being 11.3%-48.4% and 0.74%-64.9% compared with the control treatment. The pig manure biochar favored the immobilization of Pb and S. glauca biochar favored the immobilization of Cd. Biochars can effectively immobilize heavy metals in Fluvo-aquic soil. However, the addition of biochars increased extractable Pb and Cd in red soil, with pig manure biochars showing greater rates. This is ascribed to that the competition effects of ions released from biochar enhanced the moving of heavy metals from iron and manganese oxides bound form to organic matter bound form, and hence enhanced the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals.

RESUMO

Artificial sweeteners (ASs) are emerging polar organic contaminants, which can chelate with heavy metals in the environment. Recently, the ASs have been widely detected in the aquatic environment. However, little is known about the influence of ASs on the mobility and toxicity of heavy metals associated in sediment. In the present study, the release of heavy metals from a lake sediment and the toxicity to a green algae Scenedesmus obliquus were examined in the presence of two most frequently detected ASs, acesulfame and sucralose, and humic acid (HA), respectively. The existence of 1.00-100 mg/L of acesulfame, sucralose, and HA enhanced the release rates (Rrelease) of Cd, Cu, and Pb from the virgin lake sediment significantly by up to 46.7%, 86.0%, and 79.9%, respectively. Further, the results from microcosm experiments revealed that the existence of 1.00-10.0 mg/L of acesulfame, sucralose, and HA in the water phase prompted the release and toxicity of heavy metals associated with Cd- and Cu-spiked sediment, and the promotion capacity followed the order of HA > acesulfame > sucralose. The inhibitions on cell-specific growth rate (µ) of the algae were found increasing significantly with the elevated levels of acesulfame and HA (p < 0.05). Additionally, photosynthesis of the algae was affected by the co-existence of ASs or HA and heavy metals released from sediments, as indicated by the changes in fluorescence parameters. The present study provides valuable insight into the likelihood of the combined effect of ASs and heavy metals on aquatic organisms.

RESUMO

Owing to the high morbidity and mortality, novel biomarkers in the occurrence and development of colorectal cancer (CRC) are needed nowadays. In this study, the CRC-related datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. After screening the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in R software, a total of 238 upregulated and 199 downregulated DEGs were revealed simultaneously. Then the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox regression analysis were used to reveal the prognostic function of these DEGs. Neurexophilin and PC-esterase domain family member 4 (NXPE4) and prostate androgen-regulated mucin-like protein 1 (PARM1) were two outstanding independent overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) prognostic genes of CRC in TCGA database. We next verified the expression of NXPE4 and PARM1 messenger RNA (mRNA) levels were significantly lower in CRC tumor tissue than in the adjacent noncancerous tissue in our clinical samples, and NXPE4 mRNA expression level was related to the tumor location and tumor size, while PARM1 was related to tumor location, lymph nodes metastasis, and tumor size. This study demonstrated that NXPE4 and PARM1 might be two potential novel prognostic biomarkers for CRC.

RESUMO

The effects of humic acid (HA) and heavy metals (Cu2+ and Ag+) on the sorption of polar and apolar organic pollutants onto biochars that were produced at temperatures of 200 °C (BC200) and 700 °C (BC700) were studied. Due to the plentiful polar functional groups on BC200, cationic propranolol exhibited higher levels of sorption than naphthalene on BC200 while naphthalene and propranolol showed similar sorption capacities on BC700. HA changed the characteristics of biochars and generally inhibited the sorption of target organic pollutants on biochars; however, enhancement occurred in some cases depending on the pollutants involved and their concentrations, biochars used and the addition sequences and concentrations of HA. On BC200, HA modifications mainly influenced sorption by decreasing its polarity and increasing its aromaticity, while on BC700, the surface area and pore volume greatly decreased due to the pore-blocking effects of HA. Residue dissolved HA in solution may also contribute to sorption inhibition. Complexation between polar functional groups on BC200 and heavy metals slightly enhanced the sorption of neutral naphthalene and significantly enhanced that of anionic 4-nitro-1-naphtol, while limited the sorption of cationic propranolol. Heavy metals together with their associated water molecules decreased the sorption of target chemicals on BC700 via pore-filling or pore-mouth-covering. Inhibition of heavy metals for 4-nitro-1-naphthol was found to be the weakest due to the bridge effects of heavy metals between 4-nitro-1-naphtol and BC700. The higher polarizability of Ag+ led to the increase of its sorption on biochars in the presence of organic aromatic pollutants. The results of the present study shed light on the sorption mechanisms of bi-solute systems and enable us to select suitable biochar sorbents when chemicals co-exist.
